A new poem
This poem is born from my reflection on this Father’s Day. My father passed away 44 years ago on June 16. Father’s Day also fell on June 16th that year. Every year since then, when Father’s Day falls on June 16th, my thoughts and feelings get caught up in that synchronicity. I try and tell myself it’s just another Father’s Day, or just another June 16th, but I can’t. The poem centers on a quote my Father shared with me from John Milton’s epic poem, Paradise Lost. The quote has had an everlasting quality to it for me - today, more than ever. The poem cites three of those quotable moments over different stages of life - from when I was a teenager, very young father and just before his death.
A new word
This is the twelfth word as part of the project of creating 26 new words in 2024. The new word, starting with the letter ‘l’, is inspired a wee bit from working on the poem ‘Pair of Dice Lost at Craps Table on Father’s Day’ and how what we read can lead us down different life paths.
Oh, the Humanity of it All
The “Oh, the Humanity of it All’ project shares recent human actions focused on hope, justice, inspiration and igniting action in others. It is written with the belief that putting ourselves in the shoes of others helps provide more understanding and insight into how people all over the world can take action that makes a difference - be it small or large. This is a summary of such actions taken during the previous two weeks.
